MFA Research Profile: Interviewing Graduate Student Natalia FM Rodrigues
As part of my media class in 2022, I was placed in a group and tasked with interviewing graduate student Natalia Rodrigues about her thesis co-designing with She Has a Name. She Has a Name is an organization that helps educate and care for those impacted by sex trafficking. Natalia worked specifically with the Solicitor Education Program, or the John School where first time offenders are educated about sex trafficking to help break the cycle of sex trafficking by reducing the demand.
Before we shot the interview, my group (Hattie Carr, Jason Dionisio, Olivia Doland) scouted our location to the John Glenn College of Public Affairs for its varied texture and color on its walls and the large windows that could give us some extra light. We curated B-Roll with the materials Natalia supplied us with and set a mock up to make sure our shoot went as seamless as possible when we were with Natalia.
While there were some materials that we were able to borrow for the class it was encouraged that we use our own cameras. Since this was a group project, we kept a log of whose device was used for what shot so everyone could use our shots and know what was in that video.
Once we finished shooting, our teacher encouraged us to create a storyboard of some kind to help us organize the information we collected.
I created two, one with the template provided to us and one that I made from scratch. I was having a hard time wrapping my head around the template version and I needed a layout that made sense to me.
After that it was just weeks of editing in Premiere Pro, adding additional music and some small transitions. I wanted the music to compliment the material by being soft and hopeful.
My interview was selected to be uploaded to the Ohio State Design Youtube as the official Research Profile for Natalia.
